PDF File Download: Children of Dune – Dune Messiah Theme NAF Tab
Original Composer: Bryan Tyler
Technical notes: Requires use of cross-fingering, half-holing and an upper octave note. Play on an NAF in the key of D if you wish to accompany the original track.
About: From the television series Children of Dune, an adaptation of the two novels Dune Messiah and Children of Dune written by Frank Herbert. This theme recurs throughout the entirety of Tyler’s score; it’s a very short, simple motif, but very beautiful indeed. Rendered on duduk in this instance (an Armenian flute) by Tyler himself, it also suits the haunting tones of NAF very well.
On Playing: This piece is very straightforward to play and shouldn’t present you with too many challenges. The first section is repeated twice; in the original track it starts by alternating between a female vocal and duduk and on the repeat has a key change to a lower-sounding duduk. (Switch to an NAF in the key of G if you wish to follow the change of key, then go back to your A flute for the second section.)
The half hole occurs between it’s two adjacent notes so is easy to implement. The only cross fingering comes in on the second section, starting at around 1:52, but the piece is so steady you should have plenty of time to set your fingers up for it.
